Note from Therfield Amnesty International Group
November 2006

The members of Therfield Amnesty International group would like to express their appreciation of the £150.00 granted to them by the trust. We meet weekly and are trying to be an active group, which means mostly writing letters and postcards of moral support to political prisoners around the world, many of whom are in jail or on death row simply for speaking their mind. We also bring our concerns to the attention of our own government and MPs, asking them to use their influence through diplomatic channels around the world.

This year we have been concentrating on the content of our letters, couching them in what we hope is the appropriate language of outrage and disappointment. This is a very useful exercise for students, and we have written to numerous national leaders. So far no replies however.

The money will be used predominantly to buy the necessary stamps, but we have also purchased Christmas cards to send as part of Amnesty's Christmas campaign, letting people in jail in the less savoury places of the world know that someone, somehwere knows of their predicament and is trying to help.

The money is much appreciated and is enabling us to carry out work that we could not do without it.

Yours

Steve Andrews

FAO Therfield Trust

I am in the wonderful position of writing a second letter of thanks to you for the recent allocation of funds to the Mathematics faculty. This time, we have bought 20 GCSE Statistics books to use with an extra-curricular GCSE in Statistics. At the moment, about 10 year 10 students are meeting after school with me an Mr Ross, but next year we hope to offer it as an option, leading on to an AS module for example in year 11.

We would not have been able to offer this without your help, so please accept our sincere thanks for your consideration – again.

Yours faithfully

Wendy Foley

Note from head of Geography & Humanities Faculty

Dear Trust Fund,

Can I take this opportunity to thank you for your generous donation and support. The Key Stage 4 resources will enable the department to make geographical issues more accessible to students with a range of abilities. The mini white boards will encourage and support further student participation and enjoyment (we hope!) of the subject in class.

Thank you once again. I hope I may be able to send you photos in the future showing the resources being used.

Yours sincerely

Julie Wooding - Head of Geography and Humanities Faculty
